Empowering The Youth Through Creativity and Leadership
Welcome to the Luvuthando Academy, a beacon of hope and empowerment for young girls in Cape Town and beyond.
Founded by Yolanda Y'awa, a passionate advocate for education and creative arts, our academy is dedicated to transforming the lives of talented and driven young girls through comprehensive education, mentorship, and skills development. Yolanda Y'awa is a renowned Singer, Fashion Designer and Visionary, born and bred in the dustry streets of Gugulethu, Cape Town.
In 2023, Y'awa opened the African inspired Concept and Vintage store, Fluffy Owl World, in Nijmegen, Netherlands in order to financially support the academy.
OUR MISSION
Our mission at Luvuthando Academy is to empower girls and young women with practical skills, leadership confidence, and economic opportunities that enable them to live safe, independent, and purpose-driven lives.
We are committed to creating inclusive, nurturing, and culturally rooted spaces where creativity becomes a tool for learning, healing, and transformation. Through skills training, mentorship, and life-skills development, we equip young women to overcome systemic barriers such as unemployment, poverty, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Alongside this, Luvuthando Academy runs an after-school children’s programme for both girls and boys, providing a safe environment where younger learners can develop creativity, confidence, discipline, and foundational life skills. By supporting children early on, we contribute to positive youth development, community safety, and long-term social change.
By nurturing talent across different age groups and stages of life, Luvuthando Academy aims to raise a generation of resilient learners, leaders, and change-makers who uplift their families and communities and help build a more just and equitable future.
Inspiring Future Leaders in Africa
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Luvuthando Academy
The Luvuthando Academy is a creative skills, leadership, and empowerment initiative dedicated to supporting girls and young women to build confident, independent, and purpose-driven lives.
Rooted in creativity, culture, and community upliftment, the Academy responds to the realities facing young women in South Africa — including high youth unemployment, economic exclusion, and the ongoing impact of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). We provide safe, supportive spaces where participants can learn practical skills, develop leadership confidence, and access mentorship that prepares them for work, entrepreneurship, and further study.
Our programmes combine hands-on vocational training, creative expression, leadership development, and life skills, using creativity as a tool for empowerment, healing, and economic independence.
Our Programme Streams
🌿 IQHINA LABAFAZI (Ages 18–35) “The Knot / Bond of Women”
A vocational skills, leadership, and entrepreneurship programme for unemployed young women and aspiring creatives. Participants gain practical skills in fashion, beauty, creative arts, retail readiness, and business fundamentals, alongside mentorship, GBV awareness, and pathways into employment or entrepreneurship.
🌱 IMBEWU YEKAMVA (Ages 15–21 | Grades 9–12) “Seeds of the Future”
A mentorship, leadership, and vocational readiness programme for school-going young women. Using the same vocational structure as the adult programme, this stream focuses on early skills exposure, confidence building, academic support, personal safety, and preparing young women for future study, work, or entrepreneurship.
🌼 ISAKHONO YOUTH PROGRAMME (Ages 5–14) “Potential / Capability”
An after-school enrichment programme for girls, offering a safe and nurturing environment where children develop creativity, life skills, confidence, and discipline through age-appropriate creative activities, movement, and leadership foundations.
At Luvuthando Academy, we don’t just teach skills — we nurture leaders, creators, and change-makers, planting seeds for safer, stronger futures for women and their communities.
